Beauty can be found in a variety of places, and mathematicians often find beauty in the equations and formulae they use.
A new study in Frontiers in Neuroscience has found that the same brain regions are activated in mathematicians looking at elegant equations as they are for other people looking at beautiful art or hearing a good piece of music.
Scientists at University College London had 15 mathematicians rate a group of 60 equations from -5 (ugly) to +5 (beautiful).
Two weeks later, they were shown the equations again, this time while in an fMRI brain scanner.
When looking at beautiful equations, the mathematicians showed increased activity in the medial orbito-frontal cortex, which is involved in the perception of beauty in art and music.
The equations rated the most beautiful showed the most activity in this area.
The researchers hope that these results can help scientists begin to quantify aesthetic experiences.
Mathematical beauty activates same brain region as great art or music
